Institutional Profile
In response to the China’s “carbon reduction” strategy, the Energy Storage and Power Conversion Research Institute was established in December 2022. It is a merger of the former Radio Energy Transmission Technology Research Institute and the Electromagnetic and Electronic Technology Research Institute. Its predecessor was the “Electromagnetic Measurement Teaching and Research Office” (Major 62), founded in 1956. Over the years, it has trained a large number of talents in the field of electrical engineering for the country and has trained a large number of business backbones for key universities, research institutes, and companies nationwide, including Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Xi’an Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University, State Grid Corporation, Southern Power Grid, Naru Group, and the Space Technology Group. The institute currently has 13 teachers, including 3 national-level talent program participants and 9 doctoral supervisors. It undertakes national key research and development programs, National Natural Science Foundation projects, and basic reinforcement plans. It has 12 authorized international patents, leads and participates in the formulation of 8 national and industry standards, and has won 10 national and provincial-level awards. It has good research conditions in areas such as wireless charging for electric vehicles, hydrogen energy generation, special electric motor systems, and high-efficiency physical energy storage. It supports the construction of national and provincial-level platforms such as the National Energy Cold Region New Power System Key Laboratory (preparation), the National Energy Storage Technology Industry-Education Integration Innovation Platform, Harbin Hydropower Generation Equipment National Key Laboratory, and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s Key Laboratory for Energy Storage and Power Conversion Technology.
Research Directions
1.Radio Energy Transmission Technology
We have undertaken over 50 projects including the National Natural Science Foundation, various ministries, provincial scientific and technological projects, and industry cooperation. We have published over 200 papers and authorized more than 100 national invention patents. We have constructed a 20kW outdoor dynamic wireless power supply test line for electric vehicles in Zhangbei County, Zhangjiakou City, and an 80kW dynamic wireless power supply field test line at Zhengzhou Yutong Bus Company. We have also participated in the formulation of China’s first national standard for interoperable wireless charging systems for electric vehicles and the industry’s first national standard for high-power wireless charging systems. We were awarded the First Prize of the China Power Supply Society’s Technical Invention and the Second Prize of Heilongjiang Province’s Technical Invention.
2.Renewable Electric-Hydrogen Coupled Energy Storage Technology
We have made breakthroughs in high-stability energy transmission and conversion, long-life proton exchange membrane hydrogen fuel cell stacks, and efficient intelligent energy management technology. We have proposed renewable energy off-grid hydrogen production, high-pressure and solid-state hydrogen storage, fuel cell combined heat and power, and grid integration solutions. We have constructed a high-stability, long-life, and high-efficiency electric-hydrogen coupled energy storage system for efficient cyclic operation mode and have conducted comprehensive verification and demonstration of the “production-storage-transportation-use” integration of hydrogen energy. We have published 2 academic monographs, authorized 5 international patents, and our research achievements have been selected as highly cited papers in the Essential Science Indicators. We have been cited and recommended by the U.S. Department of Energy and DuPont.
3.Novel Special Electric Motors and High-Efficiency Physical Energy Storage Technology
We have made breakthroughs in precision and ultra-precision linear/plane motor technology, magnetic levitation vibration isolation technology, electromagnetic damping technology, and high-speed eddy current braking technology. We have proposed and developed a variety of magnetic levitation permanent magnet synchronous plane motor systems with independent intellectual property rights. We have built 4 precision air-floating linear motor test platforms, obtained 10 granted patents, and won the Second Prize of the Ministry of Education’s Technical Invention Award. We have led the formulation of 5 linear motor testing standards. We have made breakthroughs in new energy storage and new energy generation technologies, gravity energy storage technology, flywheel energy storage technology, and reactive power compensation technology for new power systems, and have proposed a variety of efficient gravity energy storage system solutions. We have been granted 10 invention patents.
